The European Park of Karst is an idea that has been present in this area for almost a decade. The RDA of Inner-karst (now the RDA Green Karst) was in charge of implementing a public contract for the development of feasibility study for this project.

The purpose of the European Park of Karst project was to establish an international tourist centre with a clear information on the existing tourist offer network. It includes three elements of developement: science, culture and tourism. The European Park of Karst would also include a demonstration of karstic elements. 

The European Park of Karst has not yet been implemented, but parts of this project are imbedded into different regional initiatives, such as Managing Eco-region, Green Karst Park and Pivka Periodic Lakes. There is also an idea of establishing a geopark in this area.

The project was co-funded by the Slovenian Ministry of economy, the Ministry of culture and the Government Office for Development and European Social Policy.
